Mervyn BASSETT

2026 · Wellington

Died 10 July 2026Posted 14 July 2026

Former Ministry of Transport and NZ Police.

With a very heavy heart, I advise that Merv passed away peacefully, surrounded by love, at Julia Wallace Retirement Home, Palmerston North, on 10 July 2026.

Merv was the much-loved and cherished partner of Denise Bailey; brother of Marilyn and George Fisher and their families (Brisbane, Aus); and the loving father of Greg and Katrina Bassett, and grandfather to Amaya and Harry.

Merv was treasured by Denise's family: Joanne Godding; Linley and Rob Parry; and Ainsley and Carl Massarotto. He was a special, loving cobber to Phillip and Anthony Massarotto; George and Tom Parry; and Oliver Godding.

Thank you for the care and kindness shown by the nursing staff and carers at Julia Wallace.

A Requiem Mass will be held to celebrate the wonderful life of Merv at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Shamrock Street, Palmerston North, on Thursday 16 July 2026 at 10.00am. For those unable to attend, a livestream will be available on Merv's tribute page at www.beauchamp.co.nz/tributes

May Merv rest in peace.
