These terms govern your use of afterword.co.nz (“Afterword”). By using the site or creating an account, you agree to them. Please also read our Privacy Policy.

The service

Afterword lets you publish and read death notices and obituaries, build memorials, leave condolences, find funeral directors, enquire about funeral insurance and probate help, and create a draft will.

Death notices & submissions

• By submitting a notice, memorial, photo, or other content, you confirm you are authorised to do so (for example, you are a family member or the funeral director acting for the family) and that the content is accurate and not unlawful, defamatory, or a breach of anyone's privacy.
• You grant Afterword a non-exclusive licence to host, publish, display and format that content on the site for the purpose of the memorial record.
• All submissions are moderated before publishing, and we may edit, decline, or remove content at our discretion. Families can request a takedown at any time.
• Do not submit content you don't have the rights to — for example, wording copied from a newspaper or another paid notice.

Wills — important

Afterword helps you prepare a draft will. It is not legal advice and we are not a law firm. To be legally valid in New Zealand, a will must meet the execution requirements of the Wills Act 2007 — it must be printed, signed by you, and witnessed correctly by two independent witnesses present at the same time. Correct signing and witnessing is your responsibility. For complex situations, please consult a lawyer.

Funeral insurance & other enquiries

Information about funeral insurance and related services is general only and is not financial advice. When you make an enquiry, we may pass your details to a relevant provider or partner who can help; any product, advice, or contract is between you and that provider.

Your account

You're responsible for keeping your login secure and for activity under your account. Don't misuse the service, attempt to disrupt it, upload harmful content, or scrape data without permission.

Intellectual property

The Afterword site, design, and software are ours. Content you submit remains yours, subject to the licence above.

Disclaimers & liability

Afterword is provided “as is”. To the extent permitted by law, we exclude liability for indirect or consequential loss. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 or other New Zealand law that cannot be excluded.

Governing law

These terms are governed by New Zealand law, and the New Zealand courts have jurisdiction.

Changes

We may update these terms; we'll change the date above when we do. Continued use means you accept the updated terms.
