Died 13 June 2026Posted 20 June 2026

On the evening of Saturday, 13th June 2026, at Mary Potter Hospice, surrounded by the fierce love of her whānau, Ella Kahu died with incredible strength and dignity after a courageous 3-year battle with motor neuron disease. Wife and soulmate of Ty Kahu, mum to Daniel and Hannah, mum-in-law to Tori and Andrew, nana to Leo, Lily, and baby-on-the-way, sister of Joe, Nick, and Alan, daughter of the late Joe and Paule, and inspiration to all who were lucky enough to love her. The world has lost a little colour, but the incredible legacy she built through her family, connections, community, and academic career will continue on and thrive. Her family has brought her home to rest in Island Bay and welcomes friends and family to visit and take part in her tangihanga period. A formal funeral service will then be held (and livestreamed) on Wednesday, 17th June 2026, at 2.00pm, at The Pines Houghton Bay. Followed by drinks, nibbles, and a joyous celebration of her life onsite. Dress code: Joy.
