John LUMSDEN

1943 – 2026 · Wellington

Died 2 July 2026Posted 12 July 2026

14 December 1943 – 2 July 2026

John loved life and had many interests - from travel, to flying planes to whisky distilling. A career in engineering led to adventures in the UK, Jamaica and Canada, and quick progress into leadership, which brought him to New Zealand in 1992 to lead MetService. He'll be remembered by many as an early adopter and clear thinker, who loved ideas and good company. Beloved husband of Marjorie and cherished by son Kim and his partner Gordana, he leaves a big gap. Sincere thanks to the dedicated and compassionate doctors and staff at Wellington Hospital. At John's request, there will be no funeral. In lieu of flowers, please raise a glass of whisky in his memory and make a donation to Wellington Free Ambulance or the Wellington Hospitals Foundation.
