My mother, Noala Beverly Coleman, passed away on August 28, 2026, at Hastings Hospital, after a short illness, aged 89. She was privately cremated. Mum was one of 4 siblings, Laurel, David and Basil from her parents Miriam and Edward Attewell; they originated from Waimate and later moved to the West Coast. Mum was happily married to my dad, Maurice Coleman, for over 60 years. They were each other's best friends and shared many interests throughout their life together, including camping holidays, photography, ballroom dancing, home improvements and gardening. Mum was very proud of both her girls, my older sister, Kerrie, and me. She could be tough and stern with us, but always with our best interests at heart. She insisted that we both pursue further education and gain qualifications: Kerrie became a nurse and I became an art teacher. It was something we both came to appreciate deeply, later in life. Mum was intelligent and incredibly creative. When Kerrie and I were young, she made many of our clothes herself. She was always beautifully groomed and stylish, and had a wonderful eye for colour and presentation. Mum was heavily involved in the Hastings Genealogy group for many years and loved nothing more than researching ancestry. She was a self-taught signwriter and window dresser, had a natural talent with flowers that was almost florist-like, and was also a gifted photographer. She warmly welcomed our husbands, Jeff and Alasdair, into the family, and adored her grandsons, Fraser and Gabe, Kerrie's children. Although our family has halved in numbers in recent years, there are still so many fond memories to treasure. Mum leaves behind a lifetime of love, creativity, determination and memories that will stay with us always. We will miss her dearly.
